LONDON, Ontario, October 1, 2005 From Bannock to beef stroganoff, from Christmas cake to exotic paw-paw casserole, the Canadian Bible Society's soon to be released Celebration Cookbook is poised to spice up kitchens across Canada-while adding one more dash of excitement to the 2006 Centennial celebrations.
"Our idea was to celebrate the Canadian Bible Society family; our
unity, our sense of purpose and our mission as a bible society," explains Wib Dawson, District Director for Western Ontario and part of the team assembling the cookbook.
"Part of being a family is sharing food. Food is a wonderful way of
creating a common bond. It builds a strong sense of togetherness." Bible society supporters and friends from all 16 districts across Canada have contributed recipes to the Celebration Cookbook, bringing the total to an abundant 903.
A Very Big Book
"It's a very big book," laughs volunteer Ruth Wright, cookbook co-ordinator for Western Ontario. She has seen both regional and age differences reflected in the recipes as they arrive at cookbook headquarters. "I like to see the recipes that come in from a small place in N.S. and a big place in B.C. You begin to see that the Canadian Bible Society really is all across Canada."
Diverse Recipes
The Celebration Cookbook features recipes in English and French, with dishes as diverse as pull-taffy, vegetarian and low-fat specialities, coupled with favourites like wild roasted turkey and Wib Dawson's grandmother's salad dressing.
Volunteer Phyllis Erickson, cookbook co-ordinator for Northern
Ontario, was especially touched to see the recipes that have clearly "been handed down from generation to generation." For Erickson, the creation of the Celebration Cookbook was about more than just collecting great new recipes. "The living Word is what the Canadian Bible Society is all about. But at a people level, the preparation of food identifies people for who they are-and food brings people together."
On Sale Now
The Celebration Cookbook will be available at Canadian Bible Society bookstores across the country in October, for $15.95.
