WILLINGBORO, New Jersey, U.S.A., August 13, 2004 You've read the Book and seen the Hollywood blockbuster, now you can play the home game. Bible Word Up! brings the Scriptures to the family dining table, where players in the target age group of 8 to 969 ('cause you gotta include Methuselah) can challenge their Bible knowledge...
The game, produced by The Rose of Sharon Enterprises, includes 300 questions on all 66 books of the King James Version of the Bible. Players must answer questions correctly to advance their game piece toward the finish line to get the Crown of Righteousness. Along the way, players must collect tokens (or "fruit") which are earned by doing something good for someone else. Players can move forward or backward along the course. You encounter obstacles just like you do in life. Being well versed in the Bible is not enough. Anybody can win. The game can challenge the person who reads the Bible regularly, and enlighten those who rarely read it.
Questions are divided into four categories, Go Study, Locate the Word, Know the Word, and Quote the Word. For example, in Locate the Word, a player might be given a quotation like "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want" for which she must identify the book of the Bible where it can be found. The answer, by the way, is Psalms (Psalm 23:1 to be exact).
The board, a 19" x 19" quad fold board with a spinner at both ends, is designed with Scriptural references. Players begin at the start, and must run a race that takes them to the seven churches in Asia, through fire and water, into the vineyard to labour, down the straight and narrow path, and pressing on toward the prize.
While the game was originally created as a fun way to reinforce children's Bible knowledge, its inventor hopes that it will generate interest among people of various backgrounds and faiths, even those who have little or no knowledge of the Bible. It's anticipated that versions will be developed in Spanish and other languages in the future.
