NEW YORK, New York, U.S.A., August 9, 2004 The American Bible Society (ABS) and Scholastic Corporation recently announced an agreement to create Bibles and Bible-related books for children. Scholastic and the ABS will cooperate in developing a variety of Bible study and devotional books, Bible storybooks, and age-appropriate Bibles for children, with the first title due for publication in the fall of 2005.
The American Bible Society's mission is to make Scripture available to every person in a language and format each can understand and afford. The partnership with Scholastic is seen as an excellent opportunity to fulfil that mission.
"The American Bible Society is very excited about our partnership with Scholastic because it will extend the reach of the Scriptures to new markets and individuals," commented John Cruz, Vice President of ABS.
ABS is a non-profit, inter-confessional organization with a rich Judeo-Christian heritage. A member of the United Bible Societies, since its founding in 1816, ABS has worked with other Bible Societies around the world to translate, publish and distribute the Bible into the everyday languages of the people. Indeed, the translation work carried out by ABS has produced the Good News Translation and the Contemporary English Version, translations easily read and understood by school-aged readers, Scholastic's target audience.
"We are pleased to be working with the American Bible Society to create books and introductions to the Bible while helping children develop a love of reading," said Barbara Marcus, President, Scholastic Children's Books.
Scholastic Corporation, which has offices in sixteen countries, is the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books, with a corporate mission to instil the love of reading and learning for lifelong pleasure in all children. To that end, Scholastic creates educational and entertainment products, including children's books, magazines, teacher materials, and other media, distributing them through a wide variety of channels.
