READING, England, January 21, 2004 — The United Bible Societies (UBS) has named the Rev A. Miller Milloy as its Acting General Secretary. Mr. Milloy, 57, who comes from Ayrshire, south west Scotland, was appointed Regional Secretary of the UBS Europe-Middle East Region in August 1997. An ordained minister of the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) since 1979, prior to joining UBS he was a Church of Scotland Regional Adviser in Mission and Evangelism.
His appointment as Acting General Secretary follows the departure of former UBS General Secretary Neil Crosbie. The Board of UBS intends to appoint a search committee at its meeting in March with a view to giving approval to a permanent appointment in November.
Mr. Milloy is currently leading the Planning Group responsible for the UBS World Assembly to be held in Newport, South Wales, in August 2004. While leading the Europe-Middle East Regional Service Center, he laid emphasis on developing relationships between UBS and the Orthodox Churches. A number of consultations which he organised between UBS and the Orthodox Churches addressed issues such as base text for translation and Bible Society representation.
After the announcement of his appointment, Mr. Milloy spoke encouragingly to staff at the UBS World Service Center in Reading. Referring to St Paul's Letter to the Philippians, in which the apostle speaks about running towards the goal, forgetting what is behind, Mr. Milloy said that it can be tempting to dwell on past failures and present difficulties or to rest on what has already been achieved.
"But, as Paul urges, we should press on to possess the future that God is calling us to possess," he said.
He assured staff that in the coming year he would devote his entire energy to the work of Acting General Secretary of UBS, including leading the World Service Center.
Following Mr. Milloy's appointment, Peter Wigglesworth, currently Regional Coordinator for Management Services at the Europe-Middle East Regional Service Center, is to be Acting Associate General Secretary, Europe-Middle East..
