KAMPALA, Uganda, Oct. 30 — Two Bible Society staff members had a narrow escape when their pickup truck swerved to avoid a transport truck, turned over and landed on its roof. While driver and passengers were waiting to be taken to hospital for a checkup, onlookers looted the little truck's cargo of Bibles.

Ezra Ndagije and Isaac Ashinda had set out from Kampala to deliver some "New Reader" portions to the town of Kisoro, some 500 kilometers away. Dan Shyaka, a relative of Mr. Ashinda, was traveling with them. At about 1:30pm traffic on the road was light and everything seemed normal until Mr. Ndagije began to feel the pickup pulling towards the right. He swerved to avoid colliding with an oncoming truck carrying two long containers. The pickup rolled over but all three men were able to crawl out of the wreck.

"God save us"

"I heard a bang and prayed 'God save us'", he said. "What happened between then and when the vehicle came to rest I cannot tell. After some time I realised we were alive in the upside-down pick-up. I couldn't believe that God, in his infinite power and love, had graciously saved our lives"

Looters Thank God

Mr. Ndagije used his mobile phone to let the Bible Society know what had happened and then called a friend for help in getting to a hospital. While the men were waiting they received another shock. People started to loot the pickup's cargo. According to Mr. Ndagije, "Some were even thanking God for his unique provision!" All the Scriptures which had not been spoiled in the accident were taken.

Hospital x-rays showed no serious damage and all three men were discharged that evening. Police asked for statements, took them all back to the scene of the accident and then released Mr.Ndagije on bail pending further investigation into the cause of the accident. He gave thanks to God and then said, "Let's continue to pray for wisdom and guidance as the case continues, and for provision of the vehicle as we are busy with end-of-the-year distribution programs."
