SIERRA LEONE, June 8, 2007 ‘I find happiness in your Law. When you corrected me, it did me good because it taught me to study your laws. I would rather obey you than have a thousand pieces of silver and gold’ (CEV). These words from Psalm 119 formed the basis for a special session at Bible House in Freetown to mark the United Bible Societies’ (UBS) Day of Prayer on May 9.

In common with members of the UBS fellowship around the world, Bible Society in Sierra Leone staff and members set aside time on the Day of Prayer to give thanks for the history of the Bible Society movement and to pray for current Bible work locally and internationally. Just as the pioneers of the movement sought to provide people with Bibles in local languages in sufficient quantities and at affordable prices, they recalled, so Bible Societies today are continuing this mission of Scripture translation, distribution and engagement. In Sierra Leone itself, the Bible Society has been operating since 1966 in sometimes very challenging circumstances. Its current projects include translating the Scriptures into local languages such as Krio and Kono, making available HIV/AIDS awareness materials, supporting the ministry of the Churches, training literacy teachers and developing the Faith Comes By Hearing audio Scripture program.
At three consecutive prayer sessions, participants were reminded that the Day of Prayer is “a time to give thanks to God for this Fellowship and its spread throughout the world.” And as the sessions drew to a close, Executive Secretary Ruby Pearce added a special request for support in developing Bible work in Sierra Leone even further: “Make the Bible Society your own!”
