HARARE, Zimbabwe, Mar. 6 "In December we received 14,500 Shona Bibles, which are nearly sold out ... and have exceeded our target for Bible sales by 46 per cent" said Edward Mutema, General Secretary of the Bible Society of Zimbabwe.
He also reported that distribution targets for New Reader Portions and Selections were up by more than 130 per cent.
"All the churches and Christian organisations are reporting a hunger for God's Word," said Mr Mutema. "This is probably due to the fact that, as the political and economic situation deteriorates, more and more people are starting to turn to the Scriptures for solace."
However, he added that he was concerned that the Bible Society would not be able to continue meeting this demand due to a lack of resources, especially foreign currency.
"A few days ago we received a consignment of 26,000 Shona Bibles, which represents 40 per cent of our entire Shona budget for the year," said Mutema. "However, I know that these will all be sold out by May and it will be very difficult for us to obtain any more for the rest of the year because we do not have the foreign currency. Please pray that although we do not have the resources, somehow we will be able to replenish our stocks. We are grateful for the support we receive from the UBS World Service Program."
