ACCRA, Ghana, February 6, 2006 Ghana's Roman Catholics have an obligation to "support the production and distribution of the Scriptures in this country," declared the Most Rev. Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle, Archbishop of Accra, on a recent visit to Bible House. Presenting the Society of Ghana with a book entitled Catholic Beliefs and Practices, he advised that the Society should liaise with the Catholic Biblical Apostolate with a view to getting more Catholics involved in its work.
The Archbishop encouraged Bible staff in their work, emphasizing the importance of making the Scriptures available to all those who wish to receive them. In response, General Secretary the Rev. Kofi Owusu expressed the hope that this historic visit would enhance the existing cordial relationship between the Roman Catholic Church in Ghana and the Bible Society.
Mr. Owusu presented the Archbishop with a copy of the Good News Family Bible with Deuterocanon, while those who visited with him received a copy of the New Testament Traveller's Guide. In closing, Mr. Owusu encouraged the Archbishop to consider commissioning the Bible Society to produce a specially designed Bible to mark in 2010 the 130th anniversary of the start of the second wave of Roman Catholic missionary activity in Ghana.
